I know I'm super late here but I once went to an iStore/Apple store to find out how much it would be to replace a cracked screen on my iPad and he quoted me what it'd cost to buy a new iPad. I told him that and his response was "yeah, you'd have to buy a new one" I asked for a repair cost and I was quoted a new device. Imagine.

I watched a video and replaced my ipad air 2 screen for 15 dollars. You can not stop idiots being stupid. Fixing simple things are simple. Replacing plug and play parts such as wifi antennas are easy. Body work on any car at a reputable body shop is going to be perfect. I took my Kia to Chevy and they gave lifetime coverage on that repair. Someone need to challenge Tesla in court over charging blocks. They will win.

The worst thing about apples repair shop is that you will take your MacBook for a battery replacement and they’ll tell you that you need £1000 worth of replacements because of “issues” but all you asked for was a battery replacement.. AND THEN you say that you don’t want to fix it afterwards that can charge you anything from £100 to £500 for a “professional diagnostic” which is stupid

You missed a massive point on the car ownership. We can’t do anything we want with it. You mentioned driving on the road. Driving on public roads is a privilege. Not a right. And because of that, there are rules or laws to follow, to make lots and lots and lots of money, while doing almost nothing.

Ferrari has always been full of purists that hate car wraps and car modding in general, you can see it in NFS Heat, Ferraris don't have a lot of body mods because Ferrari by contract didn't allow them in the game. They could rebadge a Trabant with their logos and say that "it's not bad because it's a Ferrari". This childish behaviour in fact created Lamborghini that absolutely smoked them with the Miura.

A simple thing, if it doesn't have apple or tesla parts then it can't have their brand on that product, because if the phone or the car blasts off someday, it's doubtful that the owner even knows if it's because of the replaced item by some random industrial technician! Of course u "own" the product but u "don't own" the brand and if there is a performance issue then u'll complain about the brand and not a single item which u can't even be sure!!!!!

Everything's getting smaller and lighter and yet we can do less with our devices than we could 5 years ago. 5 years ago I could have a spare battery and a spare battery charger and carry it with me and replace in seconds when needed. Now I'd need a bunch of tools to replace a dying battery. Not okay. I'm okay with a slightly bulkier and heavier phone if I can do more with it.

Ok, I usually don't comment on LTlost videos, but this is an awesome topic. Regarding the safety argument, I honestly think it could be used in the company's disadvantage (considering Brazilian law, and I believe laws from many other countries, from what I studied). I can honestly see a court ruling that if a company goes that far to protect the product from the owner, if the owner succesfully makes a change to the product and there is an accident or something similar, the company should also be held liable, since they took it as their responsibility to "babysit" the owner. A simple analogy would be a website where you can leave comments. If the company evaluates the comments before they are published, if any comment generates a problem (such as being racist), the company could also be held liable, since it analyzed the comment and decided it was okay. That is one of the reasons companies try to not intervene that much in some aspects, even if technically the could, since this would help avoid liability.

I understand that we want the ability to fix our own stuff but think about it, those tractors, tractors back in the 70s weren't as smart and efficient and probably much reliable as today, you can basically work in a farm and not get dirty with todays technology. Same deal with phones. I remember I could take my nokia apart, keyboard battery front case... you name it, but these phones were meant to be used for calls, text, use a calculator and play snake, todays phones requires lots of tech and software development which requires a complex set of components that lest be clear, not many people are familiar with.

WRONG. Tech isn't getting harder to repair. It's the software that the manufacturer adds to the individual chips that serial them to limited components and the bullishness to not release schematic information that is destroying right to repair. "Things are getting smaller and tighter specks in design." So what? Nobody is completely wrong to assume this is a valid reason on the surface, however it's not a reason at all. This is why people like Louis Rossman exist on the internet, to show this as fact. Given the right parts, tools and knowledge that's available all over the internet in videos and written documents anyone can do the job correctly. There should be no need to have to trace an entire board to fix a simple USB port, for example. With the strategy being implemented like it has we will be screwed out of having any rights at all when it comes to tech. Lobby Now, Right to repair.

I repair my own things that are not worth to be repaired by a pro. For example, VHS, Betamax and DVD-Recorders, the repair is more a hobby to me, like playing golf for others. Last week I replaced a battery of my iPhone 6s using an iFixit kit. Before that I replaced screens of my kids Neffos phones, got the screen from China via eBay. One reason why I can understand Apple is the following: Reputation! This might sound a little strange from a right to repair point of view, but what Apple's reputation destroys more are news like "iPhone explodes", "girl killed by iPhone in the bath". This is what the tabloids write in the headline. In the text you might find information of an unqualified repair, poor quality accessories or in the case of the girl that she was trying to remove the charger from the outlet, this stupid type A, and electrocuted herself by touching the contacts… But in the news, she was killed by an iPhone. Ok this has nothing to do with a faulty repair, it is an example. Sellers that offer used iPhone that are repaired with low quality parts, like LCD display, batteries without temperature sensor. Lookalike Apple chargers and so on do also no good to Apple’s reputation.

The argument that most people need to be protected from themselves sounds valid until you realize that almost no one wants to fix or modify their own car. And the people who do want to fix or modify their own cars are the ones who learn to do it safely. I am one of the very few people that still fixes everything I can find enough info on. And when I do modify or repair something, I go bone deep to learn as much as possible about the thing I'm working on. I have $40k plus invested in tools and safety equipment. I just want companies to stay out of my way.

Is not that. Even if you have money it doesn't mean you can't get pissed for being taken advantage or have them throw away my data. If i take an iphone and ask them to fix it and despite them having the ability to change that small chip they don't let anyone else buy, they still change the whole motherboard etc and charge me almost as much as if i bought a new one and delete all my data. No matter how rich i am i will be pissed of being made a fool at when i know that my repair guy could have changed the chip for a 10th of the price and save my data if only they allowed him to buy it. Just because i have money it doesn't mean i will be pleased with wasting them and be taken advantage.

it's easy to see right to repair stems for lack of education in a broader sense, young Engineers that graduated from Universities these days can't even fix up their own homes manually, you might argue that their time is worth more elsewhere but that's what the new culture is. Just look at the car Manuals in the early stages where it even teaches you how to fix stuff in the cars, now you see Warning labels warning us not to EAT soap!? WTF?! What's the use of knowledge on your fingertips when most of the knowledge (by googling) are used for winning arguments and feeding ego? Where's the caring and goodness that use to be?

Another thing that crossed my mind is reverse-engineering. Tesla gets away with making a machine that is unique in its class, and the tech in there is unique to that company. If you can repair it, then you can build a replica, and the ability to do that could be a reason why companies are so restrictive when it comes to repairing stuff. If you think about Apple with their touch displays, that technology would have been unique to them for a long time before others caught up which would have given them a monopoly on those things and they would have always been ahead, but their first iPhone was repairable such that a company like Samsung could replicate the technology and make their own version. I'm pretty sure they were in a court dispute for years over this. So someone like Louis Rossman might want to repair things from a business perspective, but someone more nefarious might use the right to repair to steal a company's hard work and sell it as their own. We see this a lot in China with knockoff versions of everything. I do believe we should have the right to repair things, but it's something worth thinking about.
